the Journey

The Beginning

Starting from my own journey, I realized the need for accessible financial education tailored for diverse backgrounds.

Inspired by a mission to bridge financial knowledge gaps, I founded a platform dedicated to championing accessible finance education and side hustle opportunities through inclusive learning.

My Story

I’m Nakeysha, a mom with my roots in Portland, OR, now planting seeds in California. My journey into the world of finance has been anything but conventional, and it’s this unique path that inspired me to create this blog.

After a few years in tech, I transitioned to a major bank and was surprised by how much I loved the banking industry. The logistics of how money moves through the banking system fascinated me. A year before the pandemic, I returned to banking in Operations, starting in a role focused on deposit processing and working my way up to an expert level in balancing during my time with the bank.

When COVID-19 hit, I worked remotely for my banking job and a temporary financial tech position, juggling 65-75 hour work weeks. This period was intense but rewarding, as I gained new skills and stayed grounded in banking fundamentals. After the temporary job ended, I continued working the same hours per week remotely in various roles, including at a furniture company and a veterinary hospital, while maintaining my corporate job in banking.

After returning to the office after over a year and a half of working long hours remotely, I entered the gig economy with food delivery for Uber Eats and Grubhub shortly thereafter, enjoying its independence. Although I found much joy and fulfillment in my work, I faced unexpected challenges in a toxic work environment, leading me to resign from the banking job I had poured my heart into.

After that, I interviewed with a federal agency, received a couple of job offers in the medical insurance industry, and briefly accepted a remote position at another major bank but ultimately decided to turn it down before my start date. Instead, I continued exploring the gig economy and side hustle opportunities, finding joy in working for myself while maintaining my love for finance.

This journey led me to start The Misfit Finance. My mission is to make finance accessible and empowering for all women, regardless of their life circumstances. My time in the banking sector showed me that finance is about much more than money—it’s about understanding the logistics and psychological factors. I also unexpectedly realized that finance was much simpler than I thought to learn, and it inspired me to show that to others as well. Join me on this journey of resilience, adaptation, and empowerment, as we navigate the world of finance together.
